چکیده

A plasmodium of acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a large single cell with many nuclei. Presented to a configuration of attracting and repelling stimuli a plasmodium optimizes its growth pattern and spans the attractants, while avoiding repellents, with efficient network of protoplasmic tubes. Such behaviour is interpreted as computation and the plasmodium as an amorphous growing biological computer. Till recently laboratory prototypes of slime mould computing devices (Physarum machines) employed rolled oats and oat powder to represent input data. We explore alternative sources of chemo-attractants, which do not require a sophisticated laboratory synthesis. We show that plasmodium of P. polycephalum prefers sedative herbal tablets and dried plants to oat flakes and honey. In laboratory experiments we develop a hierarchy of slime-moulds chemo-tactic preferences. We show that Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) is strongest chemo-attractant of P. polycephalum outperforming not only most common plants with sedative activities but also some

Physarum Polycephalum changes polyaniline properties

Physarum polycephalum slime mould can modify polyaniline (PANI) features due to its internal activity. We created networks with different conductivity made by the slime mould on PANI substrates. Thus, Physarum’s growth results in changing the conductivity state of PANI layers, providing negative and positive patterning of the samples. A spectrophotometric scanner is here exploited to investigat...

Towards slime mould colour sensor: Recognition of colours by Physarum polycephalum

Acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a popular now user-friendly living substrate for designing of future and emergent sensing and computing devices. P. polycephalum exhibits regular patterns of oscillations of its surface electrical potential. The oscillation patterns are changed when the slime mould is subjected to mechanical, chemical, electrical or optical stimuli. We evaluate fea...

Towards slime mould chemical sensor: Mapping chemical inputs onto electrical potential dynamics of Physarum Polycephalum

Plasmodium of slime mould Physarum polycephalum is a large single celled organism visible unaided by the eye. This slime mould is capable of optimising the shape of its protoplasmic networks in spatial configurations of attractants and repellents. Such adaptive behaviour can be interpreted as computation. When exposed to attractants and repellents, Physarum changes patterns of its electrical ac...

Approximation of Statistical Analysis and Estimation by Morphological Adaptation in a Model of Slime Mould Author=Jeff Jones and Andrew Adamatzky

True slime mould Physarum polycephalum approximates a range of complex computations via growth and adaptation of its protoplasmic transport network, stimulating a large body of recent research into how such a simple organism can perform such complex feats. The properties of networks constructed by slime mould are known to be influenced by the local distribution of stimuli within its environment...
